UK Professional Standards for Equine Facilitated Interactions

Welcome to the professional register for practitioners of Equine Facilitated Interactions (EFI), independently accredited by the UK’s Professional Standards Authority for Health and Social Care (PSA).

This register was established by the Athena® Herd Foundation to provide the public with a clear benchmark of quality for practitioners in the field. This includes professionals offering services such as Equine Assisted/Facilitated Learning, Therapy, Counselling, and Psychotherapy.

Our accreditation by the PSA means we meet their rigorous standards. Practitioners on our register can display the PSA Accredited Registers Quality Mark—a visible assurance that they are committed to the highest standards of safety, ethics, and professional practice.

Our Commitment to Excellence

The register's core objective is to protect the public and promote confidence in the therapeutic and educational benefits of interacting with equines. We achieve this through four key commitments:

  • Protecting the Public: Setting and upholding robust professional and ethical standards to protect clients from the risk of harm.

  • Building Confidence: Promoting and maintaining public trust in the field of Equine Facilitated Interactions.

  • Defining Standards: Providing a clear and comprehensive definition of the professional standards required for safe and effective practice.

  • Ensuring Compliance: Requiring all registered practitioners to demonstrate ongoing adherence to these high standards.

For the Public: Your Assurance of Quality

When you choose a practitioner from our PSA accredited register, you can be confident that they have:

  • Had their qualifications and experience independently verified.

  • Committed to a strict code of professional and ethical conduct.

  • A proven dedication to the health and welfare of the equines in their care.

  • Met the benchmark of quality required to display the PSA Quality Mark.

This register gives you the peace of mind that your practitioner is part of a regulated professional community that prioritises your well-being.
