CHANGING PERSPECTIVE AND SPACE

When we set ourselves a goal or need to resolve a problem or challenge it often requires some degree of personal change. Einstein is often quoted as saying: “We cannot solve our problems with the same level of thinking that created them”.

Here is a simple model to look at the goal we want in lots of different ways, with lots of layers. This model is based upon the Robert Dilts’ “logical levels of change”.

It will help you to understand and think of all the things that you might need to work upon by asking yourself the following questions– starting at the easiest level : the bottom!

Key Word Target for Learner Level
Who else

Who else will benefit? This is called Purpose or Contribution
Who

Who am I when I am doing this?

This is our Identity
Why Why am I doing this and why is it important to me ?

This is called Values & Beliefs
How

What do I need to help me do this?

This is our Skills & Strengths
What What should I be doing or saying ?

This is our Behaviour
Where

Where will I be and when will it happen?

This is our Environment

Set out the arena such that there are six clear spaces that one can step into – sequentially.

Take the horse on a journey from “Where” to “Who else” and back again. In each space the facilitator asks the question of their client once they both come to rest. The answer can be out loud or silent – client’s choice.

As they travel the journey we watch the interaction of horse and human. The journey back down the levels is generally easier for the client, as the higher levels connect them with their real purpose, and as such provide an alternative and often clearer perspective on their challenges
